Types of Acupuncture:

Because there are multiple ways to stimulate an acupuncture point, we offer five types of acupuncture. Each patient will receive either one or a combination of multiple methods depending on the patient, the condition, and the situation.

The types of acupuncture that we offer are:

  1. Dry Needle Acupuncture: This method involves the use of needles only. The needles are placed in the point and left in place to stimulate the point for a period of time. Some needles can be removed instantly, while others should stay in for as long as 20 minutes.
  2. Electro Acupuncture: This method involves hooking up pairs of dry needles to a pulsing electrical current at a specific frequency. The electrical stimulation is similar to a TENS unit that would be used in physical therapy to provide a hands-free massage. However with acupuncture the stimulation occurs at the acupuncture point and inside the muscle and can therefore provide a stronger effect. The current is carefully monitored to ensure your pets comfort. This technique is usually avoided in pets with a history of seizures.
  3. Aqua Acupuncture: This method involves the injection of a liquid into the acupuncture point. The liquid puts pressure on and stimulates the point for a period of time (even after the session has concluded). The most common fluid for injection is vitamin b-12. Other fluids that can be used for injection include adequan (an injectable joint supplement) and traumeel (a homeopathic pain medication).
  4. Laser Acupuncture: This method involves using laser light to penetrate the tissues and stimulate acupuncture points. This method is the only method of acupuncture that does not use any needles and it is often used on points that are very sensitive or in situations where it is difficult to place a needle. The laser needs to be focused on each point for a short period of time (usually up to 30 seconds).
  5. Moxibustion: This method involves the stimulation of acupuncture points using moxa, a stick made of dried mugwort. Because the stick is lit, it produces heat and most forms of moxa also produce smoke. Moxa can be used over an area or over acupuncture needles. Because it is lit, it provides a warming sensation and and encourages the flow of qi and blood. It is often used for cold conditions (ie yang deficiencies) but is also used to help relieve stagnation and pain associated with other chronic conditions including arthritis.
